Later this fall, Berry-a writer and historian by profession-will open a bar, his first, inside the Bienville House, a hotel in New Orleans's French Quarter. But this particular daiquiri marathon was in service of something else. It would not be unlike Berry to endure such pleasant research for one of his many influential books on the history of tiki culture and its companion cocktails. "I would make three daiquiris a night, seven nights a week, each time doing a slightly different sugar, different ratios, different rums-over and over again trying to get something that was the best it could be," he says.
